LoRa IoT condition monitoring for high-voltage electrical assets
At TerraSense Analytics: leadership of hardware and software development for CRWN, with multi-SoC STM32 devices recording ultrasonic audio, a custom LoRa protocol with cellular transmission, edge AI processing, and a server-side database and GUI.
- Industry
- High-voltage asset monitoring
- Role
- Architect, lead developer, and team lead
- Technologies
- STM32, LoRa, Cellular, Ultrasonic audio, Edge AI, Databases, GUI
Problem
Devices needed for long-term monitoring of static electrical assets.
Approach
The role covered leading hardware and software development for CRWN, an IoT-based condition monitoring system, as system architect and lead developer. It also included managing a team of developers whose work ranged from AI to firmware.
The system spanned the whole stack:
- Multi-SoC device architecture. Radio and processing devices were connected for a mult-soc system.
- Ultrasonic audio recording. Sampling ultrasonic audio at a defined interval.
- LoRa protocol development and cellular transmission. A custom multi-hop LoRa protocol was developed for the system.
- Edge AI processing. Ultrasonic audio was processed and passed through an onboard AI model.
- Server-side databasing and GUI. Stored using AWS, with a GUI to access databased data.
- Leading the team. Team size of 4 people including embedded developers and data scientist.
Result
Real-world trials were executed to validate system requirements and performance.
